Joshi Research Group is proud to announce its first PhD graduate. Ramin successfully defended his PhD thesis titled “ Modeling Slip Gradients and Internal Stresses in Crystalline Microstructures with Distributed Defects” on May 4th, 2012. He is officially Dr. Ramin Aghababaei now.

Abhilash’s paper “Stochastic Rate-dependent Elasticity and Failure of Soft Fibrous Networks” has been accepted for publication in Soft Matter. This paper is co-authored with Professor Prashant Purohit (MEAM UPenn).

We are pleased to organize a mini-symposium on “Plasticity: Bridging the Scales from Micro-Macro” at the 22nd International Workshop on Computational Mechanics of Materials to be held during September 24-26, 2012 in Baltimore, MD, USA. The MS is co-organized with Prof. Amit Acharya (CMU) and Prof. Jaafar El-Awady (JHU). Abstract submission deadline is May 15, 2012 and the submission website is here. We are listed as M.S.#13.

Shailendra gave a talk titled “To Yield or Not to Yield: Materials Mechanics of the Ultra-soft and the Ultra-strong” at the bi-weekly Brown-bag ME Faculty Seminar Series. He is a co-organizer and coordinator of this internal seminar series with Profs. Nhan Phan-Thien and Vincent Tan.

Miss Cynthia Byer, a PhD Candidate at Johns Hopkins University, visited our group. She was involved in developing mechanistic models to predict size effects in pure Mg.

Hamid ‘s first paper titled Crystal plasticity of nano-twinned microstructures: a discrete twin approach for copper has been accepted for publication in Acta Materialia.

Ramin ‘s paper titled Grain size-inclusion size interaction in metal matrix composites using mechanism-based gradient crystal plasticity has been accepted for publication in International Journal of Solids and Structures.

Announcing the arrival of baby boy, Avneesh, in Shailendra ‘s family. Born on May 6th, 2011, 0859 hrs at National University Hospital.

March 2011

Shailendra receives funding from US Army’s International Technology Center-Pacific (ITC-PAC) to investigate Size-Dependent Mechanisms in Hierarchical Magnesium Composites. This experimental-computational project is in part collaboration with Professor Manoj Gupta (ME).

Jan 2011

Shailendra is teaching ESP 2106 Principles of Continua this semester.

Professor K.T. Ramesh (Johns Hopkins University) visited our group during Jan 01-14, 2011 as a part of collaborative research in the mechanics of nanostructured materials and interfaces. He presented a seminar in ME titled Soft, Squishy and Fibrous: a Cellular-Level Injury Criterion for Traumatic Brain Injury in Humans.

Professor Lallit Anand (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) visited our group on Jan 06, 2011. He presented a seminar in ME titled Mechanics of Amorphous Polymers: Micron-Scale Hot-Embossing; Shape-Memory Polymers.

Nov/ Dec 2010

Shailendra receives funding of SGD 360,990 (3 years) from the Scientific and Engineering Research Council (SERC) Singapore, under the Materials World Network Program in collaboration with NSF-USA. The project aims at investigating the Dynamics of Discrete Twinning in FCC and HCP metals through combined experimental and computational approaches. This project will be jointly carried out with his US counterpart, Professor K.T. Ramesh at the Johns Hopkins University, who is separately funded by the NSF.

Shailendra and Hamid attend the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (Nov 12-18, 2010); Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to give two invited talks in the session on Size Scale Effects in Micro/Nano Structured Materials and Composites (Organizer: Prof. Rashid Abu Al-Rub).
